In today’s world, digital technologies are woven into almost every aspect of life. Children learn, play and connect through screens more than ever before.
While these tools bring incredible opportunities, they also raise important questions: How much screen time is healthy?
How can we ensure children’s safety online? And how do we create balance between the digital and the offline world?
This is where digital wellbeing comes in.
What is digital wellbeing?
Digital wellbeing means more than simply limiting time on a device. It is about helping children, families, and schools to build healthy, balanced, and meaningful relationships with technology. It includes:
- Confidence to use digital tools productively and creatively.
- Awareness of risks such as online safety, data privacy, and cyberbullying.
- Balance between online and offline activities to support mental and physical health.
- Inclusion so that all children, regardless of background, have equal access to digital opportunities.
Why does it matter in schools?
Schools are not just places of academic learning; they are also key environments where children develop habits, values, and life skills. With digital devices now a permanent part of classrooms, schools play a vital role in shaping how children use technology.
Without guidance, digital tools can lead to challenges:
- excessive screen time,
- difficulties concentrating,
- anxiety around social media,
- unequal access to digital resources.
But with the right strategies, the same tools can unlock creativity, collaboration, and new forms of learning. That is why supporting teachers, parents, and policymakers is so essential.
The European perspective
Digital wellbeing is not only a personal or family matter—it is a European priority. Across Europe, governments and schools are looking for ways to ensure children grow up digitally skilled, safe, and balanced. The Erasmus+ funded TechWell project responds to this need by piloting and refining strategies for digital wellbeing in schools.
How TechWell makes a difference
The TechWell consortium brings together partners from education, policy, and technology to create practical solutions for everyday school life. This includes:
- developing clear strategy, suite,
- co-creating with teachers, parents, and students,
- testing approaches in schools,
- and sharing results widely across Europe.
Our work is guided by one belief: digital wellbeing matters because it shapes the future of our children.
By acting now, we can ensure that digital technologies are not a source of stress or harm, but tools that empower children to learn, connect, and thrive.
